The debt snowball is a simple payoff method: pay the minimum on everything, put any extra toward the smallest balance, and when it is gone, roll that payment into the next one. Each paid-off debt makes the next payment bigger.

This version is built for two people. Each debt is marked as partner 1’s, partner 2’s or shared, and there is a progress bar for each, so you can see both your own progress and the household total.

How it works

List every debt and mark it as partner 1’s, partner 2’s or shared. Order them from smallest balance to largest. Pay the minimum on all of them and put any extra on the smallest; when it is paid, roll that payment into the next. The progress bars show each person’s debts and the shared ones.

How to use it

  1. Write both names at the top, then list every debt with its balance, rate and minimum payment.
  2. Number the debts from smallest balance to largest. That is your snowball order.
  3. Pay minimums on all, put the extra on number 1, and tick it off with the date when it is paid.

Ways to use it

  • Prefer the avalanche? Number debts by interest rate instead.
  • Agree on a monthly extra amount together and write it in the snowball box.
  • Celebrate each paid-off debt with something small and free.

Tips

  • Write the extra monthly amount you can both commit to in the snowball box.
  • Celebrate each paid-off debt. Small wins keep the plan going.

Questions

How does the debt snowball work for couples?

The same as for one person: smallest balance first, minimums on the rest, and each paid-off payment rolls into the next. Listing whose debt is whose keeps it fair and visible.

Should couples pay off debt together?

Many couples choose to, especially for shared debts. The tracker works either way, since each debt is marked yours, mine or ours.

Snowball or avalanche?

The snowball gives quicker wins; the avalanche usually costs less interest. See the snowball or avalanche decision sheet to compare.
